Pigs Might Fly theatrical washable blood was first created by the award-winning motion picture industry veteran, Nick Dudman, who found that in the course of his work he would regularly be asked by Special Effects teams to provide them with realistic fake blood. With numerous make-up effects jobs coming his way, Nick made up his own supplies for his work and it wasn’t long before other make-up artists were asking him to supply them also.
The washability of this “blood” was the key to its success - other bloods on the market were notorious for staining, a costly problem on costumes, wigs and unprotected skin. Not just for make-up artists, Nick’s Pigs Might Fly Blood has long been the choice of Wardrobe, Wigs and Props masters too due to the ease of cleaning away from fabric and furnishings. From crime thrillers to hospital dramas, it gets everywhere.
Pigs Might Fly blood is regularly seen on the stage and screen: from blockbuster movies, to major TV series; from London’s West End to Broadway and beyond; in fact, it is used worldwide by some of the Industry’s biggest names and used on some of the world’s most famous actors.
Now further advanced by Pigs Might Fly South, the range of bloods available has expanded to include pumping/splash blood, wound filler and scratch gel, non-beading 'silicon-friendly' blood, colour variants and a ‘mouth-safe’ version, all of which are certified vegan by The Vegan Society and fully compliant with UK & EU Cosmetic Regulations.
About Nick Dudman
The professional career of Nick Dudman has spanned four decades, from his initiation into the ingenious design and production of early make-up effects for Lucasfilm’s ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ to his collaborative leadership at the helm of many of today’s best creature effects’ crews.
Nick’s Film and TV credits are extensive – many of the prosthetic makeup and creature effects seen on screen during the last 40 years have seen Nick being involved: Star Wars - Episode I, II, V & VI, Legend, Labyrinth, Willow, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman (creating Jack Nicholson’s Joker), Alien 3, The Last of the Mohicans, Interview with the Vampire, Judge Dredd, The Fifth Element, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Harry Potter, spanning ten years, Episodes 1 to 8, Beowulf & Grendel, Penny Dreadful Seasons 1 to 3, Carnival Row Seasons 1 & 2, and Wheel of Time Seasons 1 to 3.
Making a move into producing, Nick is now developing a major TV Series, “EXILES”, based on the best-selling series of “The Saga of The Exiles” novels by Julian May.
About Pigs Might Fly South
Pigs Might Fly South has been manufacturing and distributing the Nick Dudman washable Blood range from its base in Salisbury, in the UK, under license from Sue and Nick Dudman’s company Pigs Might Fly Ltd., since 2012.
In early 2012, when it was deemed necessary to halt ‘blood’ production due to a refurbishment of their working premises in Cumbria, Sue and Nick had a timely chance meeting with myself, Ant Davies - on a rain swept sandbar in Cornwall, if you’d like a backdrop - and from it came the spark of a brilliant plan to allow the existing business to transfer to Salisbury, where it has been running ever since.
Six months later Pigs Might Fly South took shape; the manufacturing, distribution and day to day running of the business was under a new roof in Wiltshire, (that couriers don’t struggle to find as happens in rural Cumbria). Not only was an increasing demand for the original products confidently met by such a move but Pigs Might Fly South has further developed the range of products in response to discussion with clients, all of which are fully endorsed by Nick Dudman. Nick and Sue are very much in the loop still.
Events in UK Politics resulted in a need for further change and Pigs Might Fly South has now morphed into two divisions, albeit still very much linked. AJ Davies Ltd remains responsible for the manufacture of all of the blood products which continues at its site in Salisbury, as well as for all sales. A new company, AJD SFX Ltd, based in the Republic of Ireland, allows the distribution of products throughout the European Union to continue.
Artificial Blood is classified as a Cosmetic Product and therefore compliance with SCHEDULE 34 of the Product Safety and Metrology Statutory Instrument within the UK, and Cosmetic Regulation EC No:1223/2009 within Europe and N. Ireland, is not only obligatory but also forms an essential part of the business strategy; the Regulations are there to ensure the quality of products and the safety of the User and they set out safety guidelines as well as minimum standards that have to be achieved before a Cosmetic Product can be placed on the market within the UK & EU. Pigs Might Fly Blood has always been compliant with these cosmetic regulations and that will continue. As part of the EU Regulations, AJD SFX Ltd takes on the role of the Responsible Person within the EU & N.Ireland, thus ensuring continued compliance and an assured supply route to end-Users.
